Postgame Quotes

Nebraska vs. Western Michigan

Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008

On Nebraska's win

"It's a win. I'm excited. The kids have worked hard. We won the football game. We're 1-0 and that's what we came here to do. I don't want to say anything to take away from them, but we can get better, obviously, on both sides and on special teams, but that's to be expected. It's a win. We're 1-0 and that's what I came here to do."

On Senior Linebacker Cody Glenn

"Cody did some good things and he made some mistakes like a lot of guys. He played extremely hard, as did all the guys."

On Nebraska's offense

"They (Western Michigan) were committing a lot of guys to the line of scrimmage. Part of the deal is that you have to take what they give you. They were all committed to the line of scrimmage which opens up the passing lanes and  Joe (Ganz) took advantage of that."

On the intensity in the second half

"We just made a couple of mistakes. We have to keep our concentration and focus for four quarters. You have to think we were a little bit on a high to start the game. That's the first time we've played four quarters. I don't think (the second quarter) had anything to do with intensity."

On Joe Ganz

"Joe's a good football player. He's a better athlete than people give him credit for. He can move, he can run the football and he's a heck of a player."

On Nebraska's defensive mistakes

"We had some communication problems and we had some missed assignments. We threw a lot at them. They're not used to some of the game week adjustments. Like I said it's a process. We have to coach it better and we have to communicate better. I'm not taking anything away from Western Michigan, but most of what they got we gave them because of our mistakes. That's good and bad. It's good because when we executed the way we were supposed to we were pretty hard to move the football on. And it's bad that we did make some mistakes. It's early on. It's the first time we've been together."

On Nebraska's overall play

"Offensively, we did a lot of good things and defensively and on special teams. But we had some lapses and we made some mistakes. You got to be more mistake-free than that. We had some stupid penalties, but overall we played with great effort. The guys went out there, they had fun, they played together and now it's our job as coaches  to fix plays and come together and get a fix for the mistakes we made. I've known very few teams to come into an opener and play perfect. That's why it's called an opener."

On being head coach for the first time

"I've been to a lot of football games and I'm just happy we won the football game. I appreciate the effort of the coaches and the players and what they've done up to this point. But we're just getting started. We have a long way to go. I'll enjoy it up until the point where I go to bed and as quickly as possible I'll get back to work on the next team.
