Play Suspended in Second Round at Onion Creek

Austin, Texas - The Nebraska women's golf team closed the first round in eighth place in a talent-laden 21-team field at The Challenge at Onion Creek before play was suspended by darkness in the second round on Monday.

Senior Charlotte Wendner, sophomore Maddie Sheils and freshman Erin Sharpee all fired two-over-par scores of 72 in the opening round on Monday morning, but scoring conditions were prime for the field on the short 5,938-yard, par 70 layout on the North Course at Onion Creek Golf Club.

The 72's place the Huskers in a tie for 27th, while a 74 from Natalie Gleadall was good for only a tie for 52nd. Senior JC Stevenson managed an 81 in the opening round.

San Francisco stormed to the team lead after the opening round behind a sizzling six-under-par 64 for Tinna Johannsdottir, who held just a one shot lead over teammate Natasha Podmore (65) and a two-stroke edge over teammate Danielle Cvitanov (66). San Francisco's Christina Stockton added an even par 70 to give the Dons a remarkable 15-under-par 265 in the opening round. San Francisco carried an 18-stroke lead over the hosts from Texas State (283) into the second round, while Texas A&M was third at 286. Nebraska entered the second round just four strokes out of third place at 290.

Play was suspended in Monday's second round at 6:05 p.m. and is scheduled to resume on Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. The 21 teams will complete the final holes of the second round, before closing the tournament with the originally scheduled final round.
