Huskers Advance Three to Semifinals at Las Vegas Invitational

Primm, Nev. - Three Huskers advanced to the semifinals to lead the Nebraska wrestling team to a fifth-place standing after the first day of the Las Vegas Invitational at the Star of the Desert Arena in Primm, Nev. The Huskers have 67 points and trail Ohio State (89), Cornell (79), Oklahoma (76) and Boise State (68.5) in the team totals.

Senior Stephen Dwyer (174), senior Craig Brester (197) and sophomore Tucker Lane (285) begin Saturday with a chance for individual titles as NU attempts to make a move in the team standings against four teams ranked in the top 15 nationally. That task will not be accomplished easily, as the Huskers will wrestle without 2009 national champion Jordan Burroughs (157), who was forced out of competition following a mouth injury during Friday's first round victory over Northern Colorado's Justin Gaethje.

Brester was the most dominant Husker of the day, advancing to the semifinals with three falls before a 6-0 decision over No. 17 Patrick Bond of Illinois in the quarterfinals. Brester pinned Utah Valley's Josh Wood (1:59), Cal Poly's Ryan Smith (1:00) and North Idaho's Kamron Jackson (3:40) to increase his season fall total to four, including three in less than 2 minutes. The Howells, Neb., native had eight pins in the entire 2008-09 season.

Dwyer also defeated a ranked opponent to reach the semifinals, downing No. 20 David Rella of Ohio State, 6-0. The senior was not tested on Friday, winning his first match by fall over Western Wyoming's Cole Evans in 1:12 before a major decision victory over Columbia's Stephen West.

The Huskers registered eight pins overall, with its last coming at the heavyweight division from Tucker Lane. The sophomore started the day with a major decision win over Old Dominion's Grant Chapman, 9-0, then pinned Wyoming's Matthew McLaughlin (2:37) and advanced to the semifinals with a 4-0 victory over Rider's Ed Bordas.

Saturday's competition begins at 11 a.m. CST with consolation rounds, while the semifinals start at Noon. Finals action is set to take place at 5 p.m.
