Lincoln, Neb. -The Nebraska wrestling team kicks off its' 100th anniversary season as the Huskers host the annual wrestle-offs on Friday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m., at the Devaney Center. The free event is held in conjunction with Nebraska's Fall Coaches Clinic, and will assist the Husker coaching staff in determining NU's starting lineup for the 2010-11 season.
The Huskers finished 2009-10 with a 9-11 record and a 12th-place finish at the NCAA Championships. Nebraska returns three wrestlers who qualified for the NCAA Championship last season including sophomore Josh Ihnen (184), senior Mike Koehnlein (141) and junior Tucker Lane (HWT). Also returning to the mat this season is Jordan Burroughs, who is back for a fifth year of eligibility after missing much of last season with a knee injury. Burroughs, now a 165-pounder, is the Huskers lone All-American and is the school's only undefeated national champion after going 35-0 in 2008-09.
Behind its four returning national qualifiers, Nebraska is ranked No. 12 in InterMat's preseason top 25 poll. Eight opponents on the 2010-11 schedule are also in the rankings.
Fans will be able to pick up free posters and schedule cards at the wrestle-offs. With 2010 marking the program's 100th anniversary season, the poster honors the wrestling program's ten individual national champions, while also featuring the Huskers four returning national qualifiers and their future home at the Hendricks Training Complex.
A schedule of matches taking place at the wrestle-offs will be available on Friday. Nebraska's first regular season dual is on Sunday, Nov. 21, when they take on the Ohio Bobcats at the Buckeye Duals in Columbus, Ohio. The Huskers will also dual Pittsburgh that same day in double-header action. The Huskers will open the home portion of their schedule on Saturday, Nov. 27, against Bucknell.
