Huskers Fall to No. 4 Minnesota

Lincoln---The No. 14 Nebraska wrestling team saw its' five dual winning streak come to an end on Thursday night, falling to the No. 4 Minnesota Gophers, 26-8, in front of 812 fans at the NU Coliseum. The loss drops the Huskers record to 5-2 on the season, while Minnesota improves to 4-1.

After dropping the first two matches at 141 and 149-pounds, Nebraska was able to rebound with two straight victories of their own from redshirt freshman Cody Compton (157) and senior Jordan Burroughs (165) to take their only lead of the night at 8-7.

Compton (NU) recorded his second dual victory in two tries this season by taking down Alec Ortiz (UM) by decision, 6-4. Leading 4-3 late into the third period, Compton used a takedown with 1:07 left in the match extend his lead to three points and ice the victory.  

Burroughs (NU) added to his overall fall total for the season after a defeating No. 6 Cody Yohn (UM) by technical fall, 23-7 (5:54). The senior now has four technical falls on the season to go along with his five pins, while adding 37 takedowns during the dual season. Burroughs has yet to give up a takedown after seven duals.

After Burroughs' match, the Huskers couldn't find the win column dropping the last six matches of the dual, with five of those matches being by two points or less. The match of the night came at the 133-pound weight division, where Bart Reiter (UM) took on Ridge Kiley (NU) to conclude the dual. Kiley was able to tie the score at 3-3 at the end of regulation by gaining the riding time advantage and send the match to overtime. After a scoreless sudden-victory period, Kiley was unable to escape the down position in the second tiebreaker period and lost the match, 4-3.

Senior No. 7 Tucker Lane (HWT) saw his five dual winning streak snapped after his sudden-victory loss to No. 11 Tony Nelson, while No. 8  Josh Ihnen (184) dropped his second straight match to No. 15  Kevin Steinhaus (UM) by a 3-2 score.

The Huskers return to action on Saturday, Dec. 11, when they take on the Oregon State Beavers at the NU Coliseum at 7 p.m. Saturday night's match  will be Youth Team Night at the Coliseum as all youth 8th grade and younger who wear team apparel (t-shirt, sweatshirt or jacket) with their team name or logo will receive free admission.
