Huskers Down Eagles and Panthers
The Nebraska women’s tennis team went 2-0 on their double-header this Saturday, sweeping Eastern Michigan 7-0 in the morning before defeating Northern Iowa 6-1 in the afternoon. The No. 32 Huskers (5-1) won six of six doubles matches and 11 of 12 singles matches on the day en route to their victories.
NU’s day started with a morning match against Eastern Michigan. The Huskers had a fast start in doubles action, led by Jennifer Holmberg and Frederike Putthoff’s commanding 8-1 victory in No. 3 doubles over the Eagles’ Mariya Toncheva and Marcela Rivero. At the No. 1 spot, Madeleine Geibert and Stefanie Weinstein fell behind early but were able to battle back and clinch the doubles point for Nebraska with a solid 8-3 victory. Doubles play was rounded out for the Huskers when Patricia Veresova and Janine Weinreich sealed up their 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles over Eastern Michigan’s Xu Chang and Georgia de’Lisle-Tara.
Nebraska didn’t lose their momentum when they shifted into singles play, and the Huskers captured all six singles matches on the court. Weinstein posted the first win for the Big Red, defeating the Eagles’ Mebuke 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 2 spot. The next singles point came at the No. 1 slot, where Veresova downed Eastern Michigan’s Westerink, 6-3, 6-3. After a short break, the Huskers returned for their second round of action for the day in a dual against Northern Iowa. NU was able to sweep the doubles matches for the second time on the day, led by Veresova and Weinreich’s 8-3 victory at the No. 2 spot over Northern Iowa’s Kunzelmann and Lankelma. Weinstein and Geibert found themselves down by a score of 2-5 early in No. 1 doubles, but went on a 6-0 run en route to an impressive 8-5 comeback victory to clinch the doubles point for the Huskers. Holmberg and Putthoff capped off the sweep of doubles play for Nebraska, earning a 9-7 victory at the No. 3 position.
Veresova was the first to post a win in singles play, snagging a 6-0, 6-1 win at the No. 2 position. Weinreich was next to grab a victory with her 6-2, 6-1 win over Kunzelmann in No. 4 singles.
