Lincoln - The White team
polished off a three-game sweep of the Red squad on Saturday in the Nebraska
baseball team's annual Red-White Series by a score of 12-7. Michael Pritchard,
Kash Kalkowski and Michael Siwa each had three hits for the Whites, including
two doubles and two RBIs for Kalkowski, as well as a triple and double for
Siwa. The Red's Chad Christensen blasted the first and only home run of the
series with a two-out grand slam in the bottom of the eighth inning for his
only hit of the game.
King started for the White team and gave them a solid four innings, as he gave
up just four hits and struck out four. Five other pitchers combined to work the
final five innings, including freshman Aaron Bummer, who got the win.
putting up two runs in the top of the first, the White team took a commanding
8-0 lead with six runs in the second. The Whites started the inning with four
consecutive hits and a walk, including a double from Siwa. Following the first
out of the inning, Kalkowski plated two more runners with a single, before Zach
Hirsch posted a strikeout and got Sam Stucky to groundout to end the inning.
Reds answered with two runs in the bottom of the second to get on the board,
but would not strike again until Christensen's homer in the eighth. The two
runs in the second got started with a two-out hit-by-pitch of Richard Stock,
who then scored on a double from Austin Christensen. Kurt Farmer followed with a single to score
Christensen, but the rally was cut short when King got Jory Goldstrom to fly
out to center.
Huskers will finish fall practice this week and will then set their sights on
the 2012 season. The 56-game regular-season
schedule starts on Friday, Feb. 17, in Peoria, Ariz., when the Huskers play a
three-game series with Gonzaga. NU will start with 10 games on the road before
the Huskers host their home opener against former Big 12 foe Kansas State on
Tuesday, March 6 at Hawks Field.
