Huskers Start Out Hot at Regional Championships
TULSA, Okla. – The Nebraska men’s tennis team had a good opening day at the USTA/ITA Regional Championship, and will have two players playing in the round of 16 in the singles tournament Sunday.
In his first round match, NU’s Christopher Aumueller, the No. 3 seed in the tournament, defeated Drake’s Alen Salibasic, 6-3, 6-2. In the second round Aumueller was victorious over Minnesota’s Julian Dehn, 6-1, 7-6(5). On Sunday in the round of 16, Aumueller will go up against Oklahoma State’s Rifat Biktyakov.
The second Husker in the singles tournament to advance to the round of 16 was BenediktLindheim. Lindheim was victorious in the first round when he knocked off Southern Illinois’ Brandon Florez in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. In the second round, Lindheim defeated Wichita State’s Guillermo Nicol, 7-6(3), 6-3. Lindheim will go up against Minnesota’s Phil Arnot on Sunday.
Nebraska’s Andre Stenger was knocked off in the first round when Drake’s Anis Ghorbel was victorious, 6-2, 6-3.
“In singles we have Aumueller and Lindheim in the round of 16, and I am proud of the way these two guys battled after struggling in their second round matches,” Nebraska head coach Kerry McDermott said. “Mentally they hung in and just competed like they should and believed in themselves. We are looking forward to a strong performance tomorrow and plenty of good competition.”
In doubles play, the No. 2 overall seed in NU’s duo of Aumueller and Lindheim were victorious in their first round match when they knocked off Western Illinois’ team of Patrick Hammers and Gino Octa, 8-0. The other Nebraska doubles team to compete was the team of Andre Stenger and Robert Schulze who up set the No. 7 seed in Oklahoma’s team of Tsvetan Mihov and Peerakit Siributwong, 8-4. Both doubles teams will be back in action Sunday.
“I thought we had a very good day in doubles,” McDermott said. “We started the day off with a huge upset when Stenger and Schulze defeated the No. 7 seed in the first round. It was a very impressive performance from our guys. Aumueller and Lindheim played as expected and looked solid in their win.”
The Huskers will be back in action Sunday when singles and doubles play continues at the USTA/ITA Regional Championship.
