For avid college football followers, Signing Day 2012 is like Christmas morning for little kids. Grown adults can't get enough of what each 5, 4 or 3-star recruit might mean for your favorite team, the conference it plays in and the impact it could have in terms of overall analysis and national respect.
But let's all get a grip here on this special day. In addition to caring so much about a binding document teenagers sign, let's all sign something ourselves. Let's vote now for Rex Burkhead and use the force of Husker Nation to help Burkhead win the 2012 Rare Disease Champion Award sponsored by Uplifting Athletes, a national non-profit organization committed to bringing awareness to rare diseases.
I cast my vote for Rex at 6:15 a.m. today. With five grandsons who proudly wear Rex Burkhead #22 football jerseys whenever they can, my wife voted for Rex immediately after I did. We could double up our household support because we have separate email addresses. It takes less than a minute to get on board this important cause, so jump the online bandwagon now, and after you vote, please spread the good news to others.
Remember, a vote for Rex is a vote for Jack Hoffman, Rex's 6-year-old buddy who's fighting pediatric brain cancer. A small alarm went off in the Hoffman household in Atkinson, Neb., a week ago when little Jack started getting random headaches again. Fortunately, the problem appears under control, thanks to Children's Hospital Boston "being super proactive as we tip-toe down the two-lane road of seizure freedom and medication reduction," Andy Hoffman, Jack's dad, wrote on his son's CaringBridge website
"We are kindly asking all of our friends, family, community members, prayer warriors and Husker fans to please consider taking the time to vote for Rex," Andy said. "Rex receiving this award will help the pediatric brain tumor community gain additional momentum and create awareness for this dreaded illness."
Online voting for the four 2012 finalists will end on Feb. 26.
