Nebraska Falls to Oklahoma

NORMAN, Okla. – It was a tough Saturday for the No. 40 Nebraska men’s tennis team as they were defeated by No. 20 Oklahoma, 6-1. The loss drops the Huskers to 1-2 on the season. Oklahoma improves its record to 3-1.

Nebraska’s headcoach Kerry McDermott called this afternoon’s match, “a tough match against a good Oklahoma team.”

The Huskers started out the match by losing the doubles point, but McDermott thought the team played well.

“We played well in doubles,” McDermott said. “We were in a situation to win.”

At the No. 1 court in doubles play, Nebraska’s No. 7 ranked duo of Christopher Aumueller and Benedikt Lindheim were defeated by OU’s No. 14 squad of Costin Paval and Dane Webb, in a tiebreaker, 9-8(1). On court No. 2, NU’s No. 44 duo of Robert Schulze and Andre Stenger defeated Oklahoma’s No. 38 duo of Tsvetan Mihov and Peerakit Siributwong, 8-4.

In singles play, the Huskers were only able to pick up one point.

At the No. 1 court, OU’s No. 4 Paval downed NU’s No. 41 Aumueller in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4. Oklahoma’s No. 53 Guillermo Alcorta was victorious over Nebraska’s Andre Stenger, 6-1, 4-6, 6-1, on court No. 2.

Nebraska’s No. 78 Lindheim was the lone Husker to pick up a singles point when he downed OU’s No. 39 Mihov (OU), 6-2, 7-6(4). On court No. 4, OU’s No. 38 Siributwong downed Nebraska’s Stefan Follner, 6-2, 6-3.

After the match, McDermott was proud of Lindheim and thought the top four spots competed well.

“It was a great win for Benedikt,” McDermott said. “Bene shows the team how to compete, and I’m really happy for him. I thought we fought hard in the top four spots.”

At the No. 5 spot in the Huskers lineup, OU’s David Pultr, 6-3, 6-4, downed Schulze. At the No. 6 spot, OU’s No. 63 Webb defeated NU’s Eric Sock in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5.

Nebraska will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 10 when they open up their home schedule against the Denver Pioneers at the Nebraska Tennis Center. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
