Huskers Snag Pair of Wins in Doubleheader

The Nebraska women's tennis team (3-1) picked up a pair of wins in a doubleheader against the Wyoming Cowgirls (2-2) and Eastern Michigan Eagles (3-5) on Saturday. NU downed the Cowgirls 6-1 in the morning before sweeping the Eagles 7-0 to finish the day. The Huskers went 6-0 in doubles and added an 11-1 record in singles play.

Nebraska kicked off the day against Wyoming in the morning. After a brief power outage from the snowy weather delayed the start, the Huskers took a commanding lead by sweeping the Cowgirls in doubles.

Patricia Veresova and Mary Weatherholt (NU) took the first win, topping Jessica Parizher and Alexandra Kovacs (WYO), 8-3. Jennifer Holmberg and Janine Weinreich (NU) then captured the doubles point for Nebraska with their 8-5 win over Sasa Nemcova and Christa Gecheva (WYO) at the No. 3 position. No. 53 Madeleine Geibert and Stefanie Weinstein (NU) rounded things out with an 8-5 victory in No. 1 singles over No. 44 Veronica Popovici and Simona Synkova (WYO).

Nebraska and Wyoming moved to the singles courts, where Veresova picked up the first victory for the Huskers, topping Synkova 6-0, 6-2 on the No. 2 court. No. 50 Weatherholt finished next, downing Popovici 6-4, 6-1 in No. 1 singles.

Weinstein and Geibert added a pair of wins in No. 4 and No. 3 singles, respectively, allowing the Huskers to clinch the win. NU wasn't finished yet, adding one more win at the No. 5 singles position courtesy of Weinreich. The day was completed on the No. 6 singles court, where Wyoming was able to eke out their lone victory of the day.

After a short break, the Huskers moved on to face Eastern Michigan in the afternoon. NU showed no signs of fatigue in their sweep of the Eagles, quickly logging a trio of wins in doubles. Weatherholt and Izabella Zgierska (NU) posted the first win, defeating Daphne Friedrichs and Marcela Rivero (EMU), 8-1 on the No. 3 doubles court.

Weinreich and Veresova paired up for No. 2 doubles, downing Miriam Westerink and Ankita Bhatia (EMU), 8-3. Geibert and Weinstein completed the doubles sweep for the Huskers, topping No. 57 Mariya Toncheva and Georgia de'Lisle-Tarr (EMU), 8-3. The win marked Geibert and Weinstein's second win of the day over a ranked opponent and their third of the season.

The Huskers didn't let up on the singles courts, beginning with Weatherholt's 6-1, 6-1 win over Westerink. Weinstein kept up NU's momentum, defeating Friedrichs, 6-2, 6-3 to give Nebraska a 3-0 lead in the match.

Jennifer Holmberg took the court for her first singles match of the season and picked up a win over Rivero, 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 5 position. Zeppernick pushed NU's lead to 5-0 with her victory in No. 6 singles over de'Lisle-Tarr, 6-0, 6-2.

Veresova posted her fourth win of the day with a win on the No. 2 singles court, defeating Bhatia in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Geibert completed the sweep for the Huskers with her 6-4, 6-1 win over Toncheva at the No. 3 position.

The No. 29 Huskers rise to 3-1 on the year and will host another doubleheader next weekend at the Nebraska Tennis Center. NU will welcome the Air Force Academy and Northern Iowa next weekend on Saturday. The Huskers will face the Falcons at 9:30 a.m. before taking on the Panthers at 2 p.m. Live stats will be available for both matches on Huskers.com
