Lincoln, Neb. - Nebraska junior Patricia Veresova has been named the Big Ten Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week for March 13, the conference announced on Tuesday. It is the first Big Ten weekly award for Veresova and the third for a Nebraska athlete in 2011-12. She joins fellow juniors Stefanie Weinstein and Janine Weinreich as Huskers honored with the award this season.
Veresova went 2-0 in singles and doubles play last weekend, helping the Huskers to victories over No. 58 Iowa and No. 30 Tulsa. She posted wins over Iowa's 110th-ranked Sonja Molnar (7-5, 6-1) and Tulsa's 82nd-ranked Anastasia Erofeeva (1-6, 6-3, 6-2) in No. 1 singles to rise to 12-2 in singles play this spring.
On the doubles courts, Veresova partnered with teammate Mary Weatherholt to pick up victories in No. 2 doubles over Iowa's Morven McCulloch and Christina Harazin (8-2) and Tulsa's Bonny Davidson and Samantha Vickers (8-2). Veresova holds a perfect 12-0 record this spring in doubles action.
The Nebraska women's tennis team is 14-1 this spring and 1-0 in Big Ten play. They will be back in action next week as they hit the road for three away matches, beginning with Long Beach State on March 20th at 2 p.m.
