Thomason Completes Comeback with Walk-Off Slam

Lincoln - Brooke Thomason's walk-off grand slam with two outs in the bottom of the seventh capped a four-run comeback, as the Nebraska softball team won its first Big Ten game in thrilling come-from-behind fashion, 9-6, over Northwestern on Friday at Bowlin Stadium.

Nebraska, which fell behind 4-0, chipped away at the lead before exploding for five runs in its final at bat. The Huskers trailed 5-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth before scoring twice in the fifth and once in the sixth.

Trailing 6-4 with one out in the seventh, senior Nikki Haget got the rally started with a single. Junior Gabby Banda followed with a double off the fence in right to put runners at first and third. Amy Letourneau then came on in relief of starter Meghan Lamberth. Letourneau was called for an illegal pitch on her first pitch, allowing Haget to score and Banda to move up to third.

Sophomore Taylor Edwards was then intentionally walked, before senior Ashley Guile popped out. With runners on first and third and two outs, sophomore Tatum Edwards worked a walk to load the bases. Thomason, who had homered in her previous at bat, then blasted a 1-1 pitch to deep center for a walk-off grand slam.

Thomason's second homer of the game lifted Nebraska to a season-high sixth straight victory. She went 2-for-4 in the game and tied her career high with two home runs and five RBIs.

Thomason's dramatics were needed after Nebraska trailed 4-0 heading into the bottom of the third inning. Marisa Bast homered, tripled and drove in three to power Northwestern to the early lead. Leading 5-1 in the fifth, Taylor Edwards' two-run double cut the lead to two, before the teams traded runs in the fifth thanks to Thomason's first home run of the game.

Senior right-hander Ashley Hagemann earned the win to improve to 12-10 on the year. Hagemann allowed six runs (five earned) on seven hits in a complete-game effort, snapping her string of seven consecutive starts giving up one earned run or less.

Letourneau (5-7) took the loss for Northwestern, which fell to 11-15 on the year.

In addition to Thomason's two home runs, Haget and Banda had two hits apiece, as Nebraska out-hit Northwestern, 10-7. Taylor Edwards drove in two runs and walked twice.

Nebraska and Northwestern wrap up their three-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
