Lincoln, Neb. - Mary Weatherholt has been named the Big Ten Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week for March 27, the conference announced on Tuesday. The honor marks Weatherholt's first Big Ten weekly honor and the fourth awarded to a Nebraska athlete this season. Weatherholt's honor comes just one week after Husker junior Patricia Veresova was named athlete of the week on March 13.
Weatherholt posted an overall record of 4-0 last weekend as she helped the No. 25 Huskers to a 5-2 upset of No. 14 Northwestern. The 58th-ranked native of Prairie Village, Kan. scored wins over 16th-ranked Kate Turvy of Northwestern (6-1, 6-2) and 92nd-ranked Allison Falkin of Illinois (6-3, 6-2) in No. 1 singles.
In doubles action, Weatherholt partnered with Veresova in No. 2 doubles to post wins over Northwestern's Turvy and Belinda Niu (8-3) and Illinois' Chelcie Abajian and Breanna Smutko (8-4). Weatherholt is now 17-0 this spring in singles play, including a perfect 14-0 record alongside Veresova.
The Nebraska women's tennis team holds a 16-2 record this spring, including a 2-1 mark in Big Ten play. The team will be back in action this weekend in Lincoln, welcoming No. 66 Ohio State and No. 46 Penn State to town. NU will first take on the Buckeyes on Friday afternoon at 3:30 before challenging the Nittany Lions on Sunday at 10 a.m. Both matches will be held at the 17th and Vine St. Courts, weather permitting.
