Huskers Top Buckeyes, Rise to 17-2

Lincoln, Neb. - The No. 18 Nebraska women's tennis team captured the doubles point and three singles victories en route to a 4-0 win over Ohio State on Friday. The Huskers (17-2, 3-1 Big Ten) clinched the dual against the Buckeyes (5-12, 0-4 Big Ten) and were close to wins in No. 4 and No. 5 singles when the dual was called off due to inclement weather.

The afternoon's doubles play was highlighted by a trio of tightly contested matches. Nebraska scored first in No. 1 singles, where the 40th-ranked pair of Madeleine Geibert and Stefanie Weinstein (NU) topped Fidan Manashriova and Gabby Steele (OSU), 8-5.

Janine Weinreich and Izabella Zgierska (NU) clinched the doubles point for Nebraska, downing Kelsey Dieters and Tiffany Dittmer (OSU) in No. 3 doubles, 8-5. The Buckeyes picked up a win at the No. 2 position to wrap up doubles play.

Nebraska and Ohio State moved to singles action, where 40th-ranked Weatherholt pushed NU's lead out to 2-0 on the afternoon win a win in No. 1 singles. The redshirt junior downed Kara Cecil (OSU), 6-2, 6-3.

Geibert struck next, making quick work of Ohio State's Manashirova, 6-0, 6-2 in No. 3 singles to extend Nebraska's lead to 3-0. Sophomore Maike Zeppernick (NU) clinched the victory for the Huskers, topping the Buckeyes' Dittmer, 7-5, 6-2 at the No. 6 position.

The Huskers were close to clinching victories at the remaining three positions, but a thunderstorm moving in on the Lincoln area forced the final three matches to be abandoned. Nebraska's 4-0 victory gives them their 17th victory this season and their third conference win in the Big Ten.

Nebraska will host one more conference match this weekend, a dual against No. 46 Penn State on Sunday morning. The match is slated for a 10 a.m. start at the NU Varsity Courts on 17th and Vine St. in Lincoln. In case of inclement weather, the match will be moved to the Nebraska Tennis Center.
