Nebraska associate head coach and former Husker player Joerg Barthel was officially named the head coach at Georgia State last week.

Barthel, who has spent the past six seasons on Coach Kerry McDermott's staff at Nebraska, was a four-year letterman for the Huskers from 2003 through 2007.

"I'm really happy for Joerg. I feel fortunate to have worked with him the last six years," McDermott said. "He did an outstanding job, especially with recruiting and guiding our team into a top-25 national ranking and two NCAA team appearances while he was here."

Barthel, who helped the Huskers to back-to-back NCAA Tournament bids in 2009 and 2010, assisted NU to a No. 25 ITA ranking - the highest in school history. The native of Friedrichsdorf, Germany, served as Nebraska's recruiting coordinator while assisting with every aspect of the program, including day-to-day operations, coaching, scheduling, travel arrangements and the team's budget.

As a player at Nebraska, Barthel competed in 75 singles matches and primarily played out of the top three spots in the Husker lineup in his first two years in the program. He finished his career with a 30-45 record. Barthel tied for the team lead in singles victories and led the team in doubles wins his sophomore season at Nebraska after winning eight singles matches as a freshman. He struggled with injuries his junior and senior seasons but still managed to win 28 combined singles and doubles matches during the two seasons.

Barthel earned his bachelor's degree in international studies from Nebraska in December of 2007.

"I think Joerg will do an outstanding job for Georgia State. He will be missed as both a coach and a friend by me and our returning players," McDermott said. "I knew I would lose him someday to a head coaching spot. I wish him the best of everything, and we look forward to competing against his new team on Feb. 17, 2013 in a dual match in Tennessee." "
