Brookings, S.D. - A pair of underclassmen
carried the Huskers to an exhibition win on Friday night at Fishback Soccer Park, as sophomore Samantha
Areman and freshman Caroline Flynn each scored a goal in a 2-0 shutout over the
South Dakota State Jackrabbits.
The
Huskers played great defense in front of junior goalie Emma Stevens, who faced
just two shots on goal on the night.
With
neither team able to get its offense going in the first half, the squad were
locked in a 0-0 tie after 45 minutes of play. In the first half, the Huskers took
seven shots and the Jackrabbits got off three shots.
The
Huskers quickly took the lead coming out of the break, as Flynn scored on a
rebound in front of the net less than five minutes into the second half at the
48:42 mark.
NU
held onto its lead with strong defense and added an insurance goal with Areman's
goal at 70:07. Including last season's exhibition game at SDSU, Areman now has
four goals in two games at Fishback Soccer Park, as the Firth, Neb., native put
together a hat trick in an 8-1 win a year ago.
The
Huskers outshot the Jackrabbits, 18-6, on the night and also produced nine
corner kicks to SDSU's one.
Head
Coach John Walker's squad returns to Lincoln and continue to prepare for the
2012 season opener on Friday, Aug. 17 in Norman, Okla., at 7 p.m.
The
Huskers then host their home opener just two days later when the Drake Bulldogs
visit the Nebraska Soccer Field on Sunday, Aug. 19, at 1 p.m.
