Nebraska senior Mary Weatherholt paired with Iowa's Katie Zordani to capture the doubles title at the 2012 ITA/USTA National Summer Circuit Championships held in Bloomington, Ind., Aug. 11-14.
Weatherholt, who claimed the 2012 Big Ten Women's Tennis Athlete-of-the-Year award and competed in the NCAA Women's Singles Championships, teamed with Zordani to serve up a 4-0 record in the tournament's main draw.
After earning a top-seven seed, the duo received a bye in the first round. Weatherholt and Zordani opened play by commanding the court for an 8-3 victory over Illinois' Allison Falkin and Audrey O'Connor in the second round. Weatherholt/Zordani rocked in an 8-2 triumph over Dartmouth's Akiko Okuda and Virginia Tech's Kelly Williford in the quarterfinals, before posting an 8-2 victory over Louisville's Julia Fellerhoff and Rebecca Shine in the semifinals.
Weatherholt and Zordani dominated the court in the finals against Virginia's Maci Epstein and Yale's Annie Sullivan to grasp the crown after an 8-4 victory.
Weatherholt, who is scheduled to return to Nebraska for her senior season with the start of fall classes on Monday, Aug. 20, will participate in the 2012 U.S. Open National Playoffs Women’s Singles Championship in New Haven, Conn., Aug. 17-20. If Weatherholt were to win, she advances to the 2012 U.S. Open Qualifying Tournament at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
