Lincoln - The Nebraska
soccer team outshot the Drake Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon at the Abbott Sports
Complex, 13-8, but Kalena Litch shined in goal for the Bulldogs with seven
saves to lead Drake to a 1-0 win over the Huskers, spoiling NU's 2012 home
opener.
The
Huskers controlled the ball for nearly the entire first half, but were unable
to squeak a shot past Litch, who posted three saves in the half. NU also held a
6-0 advantage in corner kicks in the first half.
With
the game tied at 0-0 coming out of halftime, the Huskers stayed on the attack,
but Litch continued to come up with stops. DU's Ashlie Stokes broke the
scoreless tie at 65:22 when at first it looked like her shot from 30-yard out would
sail high, but instead it hit the crossbar and dropped behind the outstretched
fingers of NU goalie Emma Stevens.
NU
continued to attack offensively and with less than five minutes to play, freshman
Katie Kraeutner had a great opportunity to tie the game with her first career
goal, but Litch made a diving stop for her seventh save of the game.
The
Huskers will now regroup for next weekend's Husker Classic. NU hosts Virginia
Tech on Friday, Aug. 24 at 6 p.m. and New Mexico on Sun., Aug. 26 at 1 p.m.
Iowa State will also be in Lincoln for the Husker Classic, but will not play
Nebraska.
