Lincoln, Neb.- The Nebraska football team started its game
one preparations for Southern Mississippi during a three-hour practice held at
the Ed and Joyanne Gass Practice Fields in full pads Monday evening. Offensive
Coordinator Tim Beck met with media after practice to discuss how the team is
shifting its focus to Southern Mississippi.
“I think our
players were really excited to get out there and focus on somebody else than
their own team,” he said.
Beck also
noted that the Golden Eagles bring a lot of speed to Lincoln when they face
the Huskers on Saturday. “They can run. It is hard to tell who we can compare
them tofrom last year, probably South Carolina though.” Beck said. “They
have a lot of playmakers and guys that can change direction on their side of
the ball.”
A bright spot
for the Huskers during fall camp and recent practices has been true freshman
running back Imani Cross. Beck talked about how he likes the versatility
he brings to the table. “He can be like Rex, a big physical guy inside, or a
fullback.” Beck said. “He’s a very tough physical runner. He also is faster
than most people think he is.”
Sophomore
wide receiver Jamal Turner has also been turning heads at practice this last
week, “I think Jamal has had a great past couple weeks. I really am pleased on
where he is at,” Beck said.
Nebraska will continue preparations Wednesday as the team
moves closer to its season opener next week. NU will face Southern Miss on
Sept. 1 at 2:30 p.m. CST. The game will be broadcast regionally on ABC and
ESPN2.
