Huskers Take Down Duquesne in Three Sets

Lincoln, Neb.- The No. 1 Nebraska volleyball team (7-0) posted its fifth consecutive sweep of the 2012 season with a 3-0 (25-7, 25-12, 25-20) win over Duquesne on Friday afternoon at the NU Coliseum.

Nebraska produced a balanced attack as nine Huskers posted at least one kill in the match. Gina Mancuso led the Huskers with 15 kills on 32 swings for a .375 hitting percentage. Cecilia Hall followed her lead with a career-high eight kills on 15 attacks (.467), as Hannah Werth added six kills. Lauren Cook guided the Huskers with 33 assists, while Paige Hubl led NU defensively with a career-high 15 digs.

Nebraska hit .323 for the match, while Duquesne was held to just a .010 hitting percentage. Nebraska out-dug the Dukes 46-29, and posted 11 team blocks to Duquesne's three.

The Huskers opened the first set scoring five consecutive points. A kill by Werth opened the match up at 10-2, Huskers, before a four-point run gave the Huskers a 15-4 lead. Mancuso posted three of the last seven points for Nebraska, helping NU to a 25-7 first-set win.

Mancuso led Nebraska in the first set with seven kills on 11 attempts and two block assists. Allison McNeal and Hall both posted two blocks, as Nebraska out-blocked the Dukes 4-1. Cook paced the Huskers with 13 assists, helping NU to a .464 hitting percentage for the set.

Nebraska did not let up in the second set, going up 6-1 on a solo block by Morgan Broekhuis. A five-point run guided the Huskers to a 14-2 lead before a kill by Hall made it 18-4, Nebraska. Duquesne strung together four consecutive points before the Huskers closed on the Dukes with a kill by Strange to take the second set 25-12.

In the second set the Huskers showed a balanced offensive effort as Mancuso and McNeal both had three kills, while Hall, Werth and Strange all had two kills. Hubl led Nebraska with six digs. Nebraska hit .414 in the set, holding Duquesne to a .059 hitting percentage.

Duquesne came fighting back in the third set, as the Huskers and Dukes tied five times before Duquesne took a 15-12 lead on an attack error by Nebraska. NU then tied it up at 18-18 on a kill by Mancuso. Duquesne cut it as close as 21-19, before the Huskers took the third set 25-20 on a kill by Werth.

Mancuso led the Huskers in the third set with five kills and three digs. Hall posted four kills on eight attacks, while Cook had 13 assists. Nebraska out-dug Duquesne 17-10, while the Huskers posted three team blocks.

Nebraska will conclude the 2012 Ameritas Players Challenge tomorrow as they the No. 19 Kentucky Wildcats at 4 p.m. at the Coliseum. Duquesne and Oklahoma will meet at 1:30 p.m.
