Weinstein Impressive in Consolation Final

Midland, Texas - The Nebraska women's tennis team left the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational with a solid showing on Sunday.

Stefanie Weinsten highlighted the Huskers' performance by advancing to Sunday's consolation singles final. In a hard-fought match, Weinstein dropped an 8-9 decision to Penn State's Carmen Sandor.

Weinstein, a senior from Germany, had advanced to the consolation with an 8-6 win over Penn State's Devan McCluskey in the consolation semifinals.

Nebraska's Janine Weinreich joined Weinstein in Sunday's consolation semifinals with a win over Texas-Arlington's Elizabeth Thoms, 1-6, 6-3, 10-5. Weinreich was knocked out of the tournament by Penn State's Sandor, 4-8. Both Weinstein and Weinreich's semifinal matches against their PSU counterparts began on Saturday night, but were called because of darkness. They both concluded on Sunday morning.

In doubles action, Weinstein and Weinreich teamed up to take on Texas Tech's Kelli Hine and Sandra Dynka, but the Huskers came up just short in a 6-8 decision.

In NU's other doubles match, Patricia Veresova and Maggy Lehmicke fell to the tournament's top seeds, Dominique Harmatch and Natalie Beazant of Rice, 2-8.

Nebraska returns to the practice courts for the next two weeks before continuing fall play at the Riviera All-American Championships in Los Angeles, Sept. 29-Oct. 7.
