Las Cruces, N.M. - Katelyn Wright matched her career-best round with a 71 to lead the Nebraska women's golf team on the opening day of the Price's "Give 'Em Five" Invitational at the New Mexico State Golf Course on Monday.
Wright, a junior from Incline Village, Nev., tied her career best with a one-under-par 71 for the second time in the past four rounds to enter Tuesday's second round in a tie for third place in the individual standings. Wright sits just two shots back of individual leader Yupaporn Kawinpakorn from Kansas. Kawinpakorn fired a three-under-par 69 on the 6,319-yard layout in Las Cruces.
Wright's strong round helped the Huskers produce a season-best 301 as a team to sit in a tie for seventh place heading into the second round. Idaho leads the team race after an opening-round 290, while Kansas sits in second at 294. Washington State shot a 296 Monday, while Nevada and Colorado State are tied for fourth at 297. The hosts from New Mexico State managed a 299 to sit just two shots ahead of the Huskers.
True freshman Cassie Deeg continued the strong start to her first collegiate season with a 75 on Monday. She is tied for 22nd individually after 18 holes. Junior Steffi Neisen added a 76 for the Huskers, while redshirt freshman Morgan Smejkal contributed NU's final score of the round with a 79.
Redshirt freshman Jackie O'Doherty added an 82 as the fifth member of the Husker lineup. Fellow redshirt freshman Cassidy Stelzmiller managed an 83 while playing as an individual outside the NU lineup.
The Price's "Give 'Em Five" Invitational will continue with the second round on Tuesday beginning with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. (CT). The tournament concludes with the final round on Wednesday morning. Live scoring is available at GolfStat.com.
