Pelini Impressed with Saturday Scrimmage

Lincoln—The Nebraska football team continued its 2013 spring football season Saturday morning as the Huskers practiced in Memorial Stadium for more than two hours in full pads.

Nebraska Head Coach Bo Pelini addressed the media after practice, noting that with the annual Red-White Spring Game a week, he believes the team is continuing to improve as the end of spring practice nears.

“We got a lot of work done today, got a little bit of teamwork  and some individual work and we had a good go at a scrimmage.” Pelini said, “It was good competition, guys competed. We had a good week and I thought we finished off the week well with the scrimmage today.”

Pelini believes that a lot of guys have stood out so far in spring practice, especially in scrimmages. “There are a lot of good things on both sides of the ball and there is a lot of things to learn from on both sides of the ball.” Pelini said.

Senior quarterback Taylor Martinez rested the majority of the scrimmage, giving quarterbacks Ron Kellogg III, Tommy Armstrong and Ryker Fyfe the majority of the snaps. Pelini was especially impressed with the redshirt freshman Armstrong.

“I thought Tommy did a good job. He is getting better,” Pelini said, “He’s got some fundamental things to work on but his understanding of the offense is getting better.”

On the defensive side of the ball, cornerback Josh Mitchell has impressed the coaching staff so far this spring.

“I think Josh is playing really well right now, he has been showing good leadership.” Pelini said.

Nebraska will wrap up spring ball with practices on Monday and Wednesday next week, before the Red-White Game on Saturday at Memorial Stadium. The spring game will kick off at 2 p.m. and will be televised by BTN. Tickets for the spring game are available at Huskers.com.
