Weatherholt Claims One of ITA's Top Honors

By NU Athletic Communications

Lincoln - Nebraska senior All-American Mary Weatherholt brought home another prestigious honor Tuesday, May 21, when she was named the winner of the 2013 ITA/Cissie Leary Award for Sportsmanship.

The prestigious national award was presented to Weatherholt in Champaign, Ill., in conjunction with the NCAA Championships.

In addition to capturing All-America honors on the court for her performance in both singles and doubles in 2013, the senior from Prairie Village, Kan., has been a standout in the classroom and the community in her five years at Nebraska. The 2013 Nebraska Female Student-Athlete of the Year across all sports, Weatherholt also claimed a prestigious Nebraska Student-Athlete HERO Leadership Award for her commitment to community service.

A two-time Big Ten Women's Tennis Athlete of the Year, Weatherholt has served as a team captain for the Huskers in each of the past three seasons, inspiring her team with a motivational speech before each match. She can regularly be heard on Nebraska's No. 1 singles court, shouting encouragement to NU's other singles players while battling for each point of her own.

A born leader who has represented Nebraska with class and dignity, Weatherholt always shows her opponent the highest level of respect.  Her performance on the court has earned her the highest ranking in Nebraska history at No. 11 in singles from the ITA, while her No. 3 doubles ranking with teammate Patricia Veresova is also the best in school history.

Weatherholt recently became the first Husker in history to claim 200 combined victories in her career. She opens play as a 9-16 seed in the NCAA Singles Championship on Wednesday, May 22, at 10:30 a.m., in Urbana, Ill.
