Griva, Wright Open NCAA Championships with Pair of Top-Five Finishes

Eugene, Ore. – The Nebraska track and field team opened the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Championships on Wednesday at Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon. Mara Griva and Chad Wright led the Huskers on the day with a pair of top-five finishes.

Griva tallied a fourth-place finish in the women’s long jump finals. She posted a season-best leap of 21-0 ¾ (6.42) on her third attempt of the competition to vault her into the finals. Her jump held up through the final three rounds where she posted leaps of 19-11 ¾ (6.09), 20-9 ¼ (6.34) and 20-7 ¼ (6.28). Her fourth-place standing matches the best finish of her career at an NCAA Championships as she came in fourth in the triple jump at the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Championships. She will compete in the women’s triple jump on Friday.

Chad Wright also earned an appearance on the awards stand as he notched a fifth-place finish in the men’s shot put. Wright posted a throw of 62-2 ¼ (18.95) on his third attempt of the competition. He entered the finals and recorded throw of 57-11 ¼ (17.67), 59-0 (17.98) and 62-1 ¼ (18.93) and was able to maintain a top-five finish in the event. He will also compete in the discus on Friday.

Maggie Malone finished 10th overall in the women’s javelin, capping a stellar freshman campaign. She opened the competition with a throw of 159-6 (48.62) on her first attempt of the competition, following that with throw of 150-3 (45.80) and 158-7 (48.34). Her best throw of the competition would just miss qualifying her for the finals, but still garnered her a top-10 finish.

Kari Heck came in 18th overall in the women’s long jump. She recorded a mark of 19-9 (6.02) on her third attempt to close her freshman year with the Huskers.

Teran Walford completed the first of two days of decathlon action with 3,794 points for 19th. He started his day with a personal-best time of 11.04 in the 100 meters. He went on to post a personal-best leap of 22-6 ½ (6.87) in the long jump before notching a throw of 38-11 ¾ (11.88) in the shot put. He finished the high jump with a clearance of 6-2 ¾ (1.90) and closed the day with a time of 49.33 in the 400 meters.

Miles Ukaoma advanced to Friday’s final of the men’s 400-meter hurdles. He finished first in the second heat with a season-best time of 49.63. His time proved to be the second-fastest time of the day in the event.

The Huskers will return to the track tomorrow for more action as the men’s decathlon is set to begin at 1 p.m. CT and the women’s heptathlon at 3 p.m. CT.
