Knighten, Lockman Honored by Big Ten
Marjani Knighten and Emily Lockman both earned a weekly honor from the Big Ten Conference on Monday, as Knighten was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week and Lockman was recognized as the Big Ten Pitcher of the Week.
Knighten was honored as the league’s freshman of the week for the second consecutive week, while Lockman earned pitcher-of-the-week accolades for the second time this spring. Lockman, a sophomore, was also a two-time Big Ten Freshman of the Week selection in 2013.
A native of Buena Park, Calif., Knighten went 6-for-12 in five games last week, producing four walks, three runs, two RBIs and one double. She played a leading role in Nebraska’s three-game conference sweep of Iowa over the weekend. Knighten was 4-for-7 (.571) against the Hawkeyes with a .700 on-base percentage and a pair of RBIs. She produced three multi-hit games last week, including two against Iowa.
Lockman earned three starts in a span of four days last week, posting a 3-0 record with a 0.47 ERA. She allowed only six hits and one run in 15.0 innings, holding opposing hitters to a .118 average. Lockman opened her week with a combined shutout against Northern Iowa, before starting games two and three of the Huskers’ weekend series with Iowa. Lockman fired a one-hitter in her first start against Iowa, allowing only a solo home run. The right-hander then tossed a two-hit shutout in the series finale. She needed only 121 combined pitches to post her two complete-game victories over Iowa.
Led by Knighten and Lockman, Nebraska posted its first three-game sweep of a conference opponent since 2012. The Huskers have won five straight league games, and Nebraska is fourth in the Big Ten standings with an 8-4 record in league play. Overall, Nebraska is 30-13 this season. The Huskers wrap up a season-long eight-game homestand this weekend with a three-game series against Ohio State on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Bowlin Stadium.
