Huskers in the WNBA: Week 1 Review
Former Huskers Kelsey Griffin, Lindsey Moore and Jordan Hooper started their 2014 WNBA seasons last week, and Huskers.com will provide a weekly recap of their seasons throughout the summer.
Griffin, who is in her fifth season in the WNBA with Connecticut, started the first three games of the year with the Sun. The 6-2 forward averaged 5.7 points, 8.0 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.3 steals per game for the 0-3 Sun. Griffin went 3-for-7 from the floor, including her first three-pointer of the season.
Griffin capped the season's opening week with seven points, 11 rebounds, an assist and a steal in 32 minutes of action in Connecticut's 78-68 loss at Chicago on Wednesday, May 21. She opened the season with two points, five rebounds and an assist in 12 minutes of work in a 75-54 loss at New York.
Griffin bounced back with eight points, eight boards, three assists and two steals in 28 minutes of action in a 90-87 overtime loss to former Husker teammate Lindsey Moore and the Minnesota Lynx on May 18. Griffin hit 4-of-10 shots from the floor, and the Sun outscored the Lynx by seven points in Griffin's time on the floor.
Moore scored four points, dished out three assists and grabbed two steals in 18 minutes in the win over the Sun. Moore went 1-for-3 from the floor, including 1-of-2 from three-point range, while adding 1-of-2 free throws. The Lynx outscored the Sun by 11 points in Moore's 18 minutes on the floor.
Moore, who is in her second season with the WNBA champion Lynx, opened the year with two points on a pair of free throws in seven minutes of action in an 89-77 win at Washington on May 16.
For the week, Moore averaged 3.0 points, 1.5 assists and 1.0 steal in 12.5 minutes per game.
Nebraska's newest member of the WNBA, rookie Jordan Hooper did not score but had two rebounds and one steal in Tulsa's season-opening loss at San Antonio on May 17. Hooper went 0-for-3 from the floor in the 80-76 setback.
Hooper will shoot for her first points as a professional on Friday, May 23 at 7 p.m., against Moore and Minnesota, when the Shock host the Lynx at the BOK Center in Tulsa.
Griffin also will be back in action on Friday night, when the Sun play host to Seattle at 6 p.m. at Mohegan Sun Arena.
Following the game at Tulsa on Friday, the Lynx will make a quick return trip home to face the New York Liberty on Saturday, May 24 at 7 p.m. at the Target Center. The Lynx will then play their third game in four days when they head to Chicago to battle the Sky on Monday, May 26 at 2:30 p.m. in a game televised live nationally by ESPN2.
