On his initial impression going into spring ball
“My first impression is that I’m really excited for it. It’s a lot simpler than it was. What Coach (Mark) Banker wants us to emphasize over the spring is to be able to fly around. That’s the thing he wants us all to do, to be able to get to the ball faster and to stay loose. Last year we had a lot of people overthinking. Mentally we weren’t as sharp as we were maybe supposed to be. But Banker is just letting us loose. As a defense, I think we’re really excited.”

On what his mentality is going into Saturday’s first practice
“I think there’s going to be a lot of competition. I think most people see it as all doors are open. I see it from playing last year, no spots are guaranteed. That’s how everybody sees it. All the young kids are coming on strong and all the older guys have to just watch their backs. There’s going to be a lot of competition in this spring practice.”

On if he feels this staff has done a good job evaluating and building new game plans
“I think they’ve done a really good job with that. Like I said, Coach (Banker) came and talked to me today about what I need to work on and improve on. From watching film last year, they don’t really know much about the younger guys. Most of the impressions the staff gets from the young guys is only from stats in the weight room. There’s going to be a lot competition in the offseason, but I’m looking forward to it.”

On his emotions with a new staff and losing his secondary coach
“It was weird. But like we’ve been doing for the last couple months, you just have to sit back and let everything sink in. You just have to realize what happened, happened. You can’t really change anything. (Charleton) Warren is a great guy, and I really like him and his family, but I know our new coaching staff will be great too.”
