2016: Chad Luensmann (pronounced LYNNZ-man) was an immediate contributor to the Husker pitching staff in 2016 as a true freshman, serving as the team’s closer • Luensmann became the first Husker baseball player to be named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year and was named a freshman All-American by five organizations, including Collegiate Baseball, Baseball America, Perfect Game, D1Baseball and the NCBWA • Was also a second-team All-Big Ten selection and a unanimous Big Ten All-Freshman pick • Finished the year with 13 saves in 14 chances, setting a freshman record at Nebraska • Tied Brett Jensen (2006) for third on NU’s single-season saves list and was three saves shy of Jensen’s single-season record of 16 saves set in 2005 • Saved nine games during Big Ten play, which led the league • Finished the year tied for 14th nationally in saves and tied Long Beach State’s Chris Rivera for the most saves in the country by a freshman • Posted a 1.18 ERA in 38.0 innings over 28 appearances • Allowed just three extra-base hits all season and held opposing hitters to a .171 batting average • Started his Husker career by not allowing an earned run in 15.1 innings over his first nine appearances • Allowed just five earned runs all year and never allowed multiple earned runs in an appearance • Allowed three hits in an appearance just once, when he tossed a season-high 4.0 shutout innings at Long Beach State on March 5.

Before Nebraska: Luensmann was drafted by the New York Mets in the 39th round of the 2015 MLB Draft, but turned down pro baseball to become a Husker • Joined the Huskers from Bellwood-Antis High School in Altoona, Pa. • Tabbed the No. 120 right-handed pitcher in the country and the No. 2 right-handed pitcher in the state of Pennsylvania by Perfect Game • Was 8-2 as a senior with a 0.85 ERA in 57.2 innings • Struck out 60 and walked just 13, while holding opposing hitters to a .146 batting average • Earned honorable-mention All-America honors from Perfect Game in 2015 and was a All-Atlantic region first-team pick • Was a 2014 underclass honorable-mention All-American by Perfect Game • Named to the all-tournament team at the 2014 Perfect Game WWBA World Championships in Jupiter, Fla. • Competed at the 2014 Area Code Games in Long Beach, Calif.
