Post-Eligibility Opportunity Participant Experiences

By NU Athletic Communications

Since the Post-Eligibility Opportunities Program's inception in fall 2015, 202 Nebraska student-athletes, now letterwinner alumni, have become eligible to receive PEO funding for an internship, study abroad experience or graduate school. To do so, letterwinner alumni had to letter in a varsity sport, graduate in December 2015 or after, exhaust eligibility, earn a scholar-athlete ring and attend and complete PEO Success Series workshops.

Of the letterwinner alumni who qualified for the program, 62 have participated or are currently participating in life-changing experiences. Learn more about our PEO participants below.

“The PEO program is an incredible opportunity to get critical professional experience without worrying about financial barriers. Through my experience, I was able to complete a summer internship through my MBA curriculum with a company that underwent an acquisition, rebranding and implemented an aggressive strategic growth plan. It not only gave me the opportunity to take what I learned in the classroom setting and apply it toward a professional experience, but also provided me a second chance to participate in an experience I missed out on during my athletic career” - Mattie Fowler (MBA Student at UNL)

“PEO gave me the opportunity to do something few others get to do - work as a volunteer coach at a Big Ten program and experience what it's like to have the job I've always wanted. I gained knowledge on what it takes to be a college coach and areas I can improve, greater awareness of behind-the-scenes happenings, and confidence in my abilities to excel in future college coaching opportunities.” - Jake Sueflohn (Purdue Athletics Volunteer Wrestling Coach)

“I am so grateful for this program. Completing an internship in Spain was the perfect segue for me into the real world. I now have a clear direction on where I want to go. I cherish traveling so much and having the opportunity to intern in a different country was something I will remember forever. I could not have done this without the PEO program.” - Sam Areman (International Internship in Spain)

"If it were not for PEO, I probably would be working in a job that does not align with my interest area because that would be the only way for me to pay my bills. With PEO, I have been able to intern as a youth mentor with AmeriCorps' Youth on the Move, which is in a career field I plan to continue pursuing.” - Chongo Kondolo (far right), Youth on the Move AmeriCorps Intern
