Q&A: Lindsay Helferich
Favorite animal: Sheep
Favorite candy: Butterfinger
Celebrity crush: Harrison Ford (in the younger days).
Favorite childhood memory: Because my sister and I have birthdays two days apart, we always celebrated together. When we were both small, my parents blindfolded us before leading us to our present. They each carried us outside and all the sudden threw us in the air! We both screamed and then landed on the trampoline they had bought for us that we had been asking for. It was the best birthday surprise and still a funny memory I love.
What are your pre-meet rituals? I don’t do exactly the same thing each time. I pray for a good attitude and a fair race. I like to get in the water right before my race so I’m awake and ready to go. Other than that, there’s not much that stays the same!
What superpower would you choose? Flying
What is your dream job? Freelance architect/civil engineer
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go? Australia
What is your fondest swimming memory? My fondest swimming memory is my 200 backstroke in prelims at Big Tens this past year. I finished the race and looked at the scoreboard and saw I had attained a long-time goal of mine. But, what I saw next is what made the race so special. Pablo was smiling ear-to-ear and giving me a thumbs up and many of my teammates that had cheered me on were all celebrating just as much as I did. Having my coaches and teammates be just as happy for me as if they had swum the race themselves was one of the best feelings ever.
What does success mean to you? Success means doing your best at each thing you do. Success is also unselfish. Being successful not only means you work hard at all you do but also that you consciously encourage others and help them reach their goals. Success is not a one-person effort, but rather it is a team event.
