Director of Athletics

In the University of Nebraska's Department of Athletics, we have a singular focus: to provide all of our student-athletes with the resources and support that they need to be successful in academics, athletics and life. Located in Lincoln--one of the safest and most dynamic cities in America--Nebraska is one of the nation's Top 50 public universities.

We are extremely proud to lead the nation with 329 Academic All-Americans and in the number of Huskers who have earned the NCAA's highest honor – the Top Ten Award with 17. Graduation is the ultimate achievement for our students, and since 1969 when the University of Nebraska was chartered, more than 6,000 Husker student-athletes have earned a letter and their undergraduate degree.

The support we provide our 600 student-athletes and 60 coaches at Nebraska sets us apart from our peers and we continue to seek ways to enhance that support. For example, we offer every student-athlete a laptop computer to support his or her learning opportunities. We offer financial assistance to every Husker letterwinner who earns their degree and who has exhausted his or her eligibility to obtain an internship, to study abroad or to attend graduate school. And we provide four-year, full cost of attendance-based scholarships for every scholarship student-athlete in every sport.

Our student-athletes continue to give back to the community. Each year, more than 350 outreach projects were completed by student-athletes, totaling more than 2,500 hours, while impacting 25,000 individuals in Nebraska communities. Additionally, for the second straight year, a group of current student-athletes, former letterwinners and staff traveled abroad on a service trip to the Dominican Republic for a life-changing experience as they gave their time, skills and resources to improve the local communities.

There Is No Student-Athlete Experience Like Nebraska. We hope that you will come visit us and join us in supporting our student-athletes as they strive to be successful in academics, athletics and life.

University of Nebraska President Hank Bounds

There is no better university in the nation to be a student-athlete than Nebraska, and there is no better leader for our athletic department than Shawn Eichorst. He is running a model program, and as we continue to build on the momentum of the entire university, I'm excited that he is a key player on our team.
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Chancellor Ronnie Green

Shawn Eichorst is a very good observant and thoughtful leader. He listens to others and when he makes his point, he tends to make it clearly. Shawn works to be supportive of what the NCAA is trying to accomplish and he always comes prepared and ready to be an active participant. He has a strong moral compass who acts on his good values and exercises sound judgment. He has worked very effectively in complex situations with other conferences, athletic directors and coaches and has been consistent in his effort to gather information, access it and help find ways to compromise in order to improve the overall welfare of college football. Shawn is an honest broker on behalf of Nebraska.
