Lincoln The Nebraska softball team scored in each of its final four innings, erasing a one-run deficit in both the seventh and the eighth innings to rally for a 7-6 win over New Mexico State in the first game of a home-opening doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Bowlin Stadium.

The Huskers trailed 5-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning. NU scored once in the fifth and twice in the sixth to trim the deficit to one. Junior Kaylan Jablonski then tied the game with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the seventh inning. After New Mexico State plated an unearned run in the top of the eighth, the Huskers scored twice in the bottom of the frame, tying the game on a sacrifice squeeze bunt from freshman Alexis Perry and winning on a two-out RBI single from sophomore Alyvia Simmons.

Simmons finished 3-for-4 with the game-winning RBI, marking the first three-hit game of her career. Freshman Tristen Edwards also went 3-for-4 to produce her first career three-hit game, and Edwards scored the winning run. Jablonski hit her first home run of the season, while senior MJ Knighten went 2-for-4 and hit her second home run of the year.

In addition to hitting the game-tying home run, Jablonski earned the win in relief, improving to 2-8 on the season after tossing 1.0 scoreless inning. Senior right-hander Cassie McClure earned the start and allowed five runs (three earned) in 5.0 innings. Freshman left-hander Sydney McLeod fared well in her home debut, allowing only an unearned run in 2.0 innings.

By winning its home opener for the 12th straight season, Nebraska improved to 5-16 on the year. New Mexico State, the two-time defending WAC champion, fell to 9-12. Kayla Green (5-7) took the loss for the Aggies in a complete-game effort.

Nebraska grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Knighten hit the first pitch she saw over the fence in center for a two-out solo home run.

Fahren Glackin answered for New Mexico State with a one-out solo home run in the top of the second inning.

In the top of the third, the Aggies had runners at first and second with none out before McClure bounced back to retire the next three hitters to keep the game tied.

The Huskers got a leadoff single from Simmons in the bottom of the frame, and she moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from classmate Bri Cassidy, but Simmons was stranded on second base.

The game remained tied until New Mexico State scored four times in the top of the fifth inning. Back-to-back singles gave New Mexico State runners on first and second with one out for Kelsey Horton, the Aggies' top hitter, who lined a 1-0 pitch into left field for an RBI single that gave NMSU a 2-1 lead. A walk then loaded the bases with one out before McClure recorded a strikeout. McClure then hit Caity Szczesny with a 2-2 pitch to force in a second run. An error extended the inning and allowed a run to score before New Mexico State capped the four-run inning with an RBI single.

Nebraska got a run back in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a New Mexico State error. Junior Gina Metzler scored the run with an RBI ground out and the Huskers had runners at second and third before a ground out ended the threat.

The Huskers put up two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Knighten reached on an error to begin the inning before junior Austen Urness doubled with one out to score Knighten and trim the lead to 5-3. Freshman Tristen Edwards followed with another RBI double to cut the lead to one before the next two Huskers were retired.

Jablonski sent the game to extra innings when she hit a pinch-hit leadoff home run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

In the top of the eighth, a leadoff double, an infield single and a stolen base put Aggies on second and third with none out. Jablonski entered the game in relief and recorded a strikeout and a ground out to keep the runners at second and third with two outs.

Nebraska then won it in the bottom of the eighth. Urness drew a one-out walk before Edwards singled to right and advanced to second on an error. Junior pinch runner Taylor Otte scored the tying run on Perry's sacrifice bunt before Simmons singled home Edwards to lift Nebraska to the 7-6 win.

The Huskers will look for a sweep in game two of the doubleheader.
