The Nebraska soccer team had seven players earn Big Ten Distinguished Scholar awards when the conference announced its list of honorees on Wednesday.
Courtney Claassen earned recognition from the conference for the third time, getting her degree in advertising and public relations in May 2017. Claassen, a Parkville, Mo., native, started all 22 games for the Huskers in 2016, helping NU to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in four years. A three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection, Claassen saw action in 72 games during her four-year career, making 40 starts. She scored two career goals and tallied six career assists.
Amanda Hilton and Alli Peterson were each honored for the second time. Hilton, a two-time Academic All-Big Ten Team member, is majoring in pre-elementary and special education at Nebraska. She made seven appearances for the Huskers in 2016.
Peterson, a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree, is majoring in advertising and public relations. She made 12 starts, and 14 appearances altogether, for NU last season.
Four Huskers earned accolades from the Big Ten for the first time, including Emily O'Neal, who had a 4.0 grade-point average. O'Neal, a psychology major, played in five games for the Big Red in 2016.
Caroline Buelt, Lindsay Hargreaves and Alexis Rienks also made the list for the first time. Buelt, who played in 21 games last season, is majoring in business administration. Hargreaves, a 2016 Academic All-Big Ten selection, is majoring in elementary education. Rienks, who played in 16 games last season, is majoring in food science and technology.
59 Husker student-athletes combined for 62 Big Ten Distinguished Scholar awards, including 13 student-athletes who were perfect 4.0 GPAs in 2016-17.
