Rylie Unzicker Named High School All-American
Outfielder Rylie Unzicker cemented her status as one of the top incoming freshmen in the country when she was named a second-team high school All-American by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) on Friday, July 7. Unzicker was a two-time NFCA All-American in her prep career, as she also earned second-team honors following her junior season in 2016.
In addition to her selection to the NFCA second team, Unzicker has been named a first-team All-American by FloSoftball, a second-team All-American by Fastpitch News and a third-team All-American by USA Today this summer. She was also one of only 48 players nationally - and the first player ever from Nebraska - selected to participate in the Premier Girls Fastpitch High School All-American Game, which will air on ESPNU on Friday, July 28. Unzicker was also selected as the 2016-17 Nebraska Gatorade Softball Player of the Year.
Unzicker capped her high school career last fall by leading Millard South to a third state title in four years as the Patriots' center fielder. She was named honorary captain of the Omaha World-Herald All-Nebraska team and was co-honorary captain of the Lincoln Journal Star Super-State squad, along with fellow freshman Olivia Ferrell. Unzicker hit .500 and drove in 47 runs as a senior, while setting school records with 18 home runs and 57 runs scored. She was named the MaxPreps National Player of the Week in the final week of September after going 10-for-13 (.778) during the week with three doubles, four homers, 10 RBIs and 12 runs.
Unzicker set Millard South career records in hits (187), doubles (48), home runs (38), RBIs (130), runs scored (185) and batting average (.524). Unzicker's 185 runs were a Nebraska all-class record, and her .524 batting average was the highest ever by a Class A player and ranked fifth overall in state history.
Nebraska fans can get their first glimpse at Unzicker and the rest of the Husker freshman class this fall, as the Big Red will play eight exhibition games at Bowlin Stadium. Admission is free into all fall softbll games, and the schedule begins with a doubleheader against South Dakota on Sunday, Sept. 24 beginning at 1 p.m.
