Huskers Set to Compete Internationally
Nebraska track and field rising sophomores Isaiah Griffith and Sydney Otto will compete for the U.S. National Team at the Pan American Junior Championships in Lima, Peru this weekend. Also, senior Angela Mercurio was selected to compete for the Canadian National Team at the World University Games in Taiwan in late August.
This week, Otto will compete in the javelin on Friday, while Griffith will enter in the triple jump on Sunday. Both Huskers qualified for a spot on Team USA by winning their respective events at the USATF Junior Championships in Sacramento in June. Griffith posted an all-time best on his final triple jump attempt, a wind-aided 53-2 1/4 (16.21m). It was the sixth-best mark in NU history in any conditions. Otto threw a personal-best 160-6 (48.93m) on her fifth attempt, which ranks eighth in NU history. Griffith and Otto both received All-America honorable mention during the outdoor season. The Pan American Junior Championships will have a Facebook live stream.
Mercurio will represent Team Canada in the triple jump on August 25 in Taipei, Taiwan. The event final would be held on August 27. Mercurio earned a spot on the roster with her personal-best effort of 43-10 3/4 (13.38m) at the NCAA West Preliminary Round in May. Mercurio was a second-team All-American in the event after finishing 12th at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
