By NU Athletic Communications

Midland, Texas – The Nebraska women’s tennis team earned 10 wins against top-notch opponents Friday at the Midland Racquet Club Invitational during the first two rounds of singles, one round of doubles and consolation singles action.

Kicking off morning action, the Huskers fought their way through singles matches, proving to be a competitive force. First to storm to a victory for the Big Red was sophomore Claire Reifeis. The Indianapolis, Ind., native picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win over Julia Navajo of Texas State. Reifeis moved on to face Jackie Carr of Arkansas, but fell in the second-round singles match, 6-3, 7-6 (3).

Adding another win to the Big Red’s day, Reifeis and doubles partner Vasanti Shinde swung to a 6-2 victory over Belaya and Hilton of Illinois.

A recent addition to the Big Red roster, Brianna Lashway helped to work the team total to four victories with a three-set match win over Agne Cepelyte of Arkansas and a doubles victory later in the day. The senior transfer from Missouri pushed on to a 4-6, 6-4, 10-6 decision to move to the second round of singles action. Paired up with Husker Paula Del Cueto Castillo, the duo dominated in a 6-0 final win over Abilene Christian's Henry and Mocciola.

Del Cueto Castillo rocketed Nebraska ahead with a strong two-set singles victory over UAB's Alex Shchipakina. Del Cueto Castillo picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win over her opponent to lock in the fifth victory for the Huskers.

Contributing the sixth and seventh wins for the Big Red was new junior talent, Marina Cozac. Cozac was the only NU women’s tennis player to secure two singles wins in the main draw during Friday's action. The Chicago, Ill., native powered past UAB’s Megan Bertrands, 6-4, 6-1, before defeating Andrea Fuchs of Texas State in a hard-fought 7-6 (4), 6-4 win.

Husker sophomore M’Balia Bangoura partnered with Cozac to produce a skilled 6-3 victory over Texas State’s Lewis and Jones. It was Nebraska’s third and final doubles victory for the day. Bangoura also pocketed a 7-5, 6-1 consolation singles win over Texas State's Joy Chiate.

Jeannie Lozowski capped the Big Red's 10-win day with three-set win over Emilee Duoug of Illinois. Lozowski, a sophomore from Port Saint Lucie, Fla., outlasted Duoug 3-6, 6-4, 10-8 in consolation singles.

Competition will begin again on Saturday at 9 a.m. with singles action. Doubles action will follow completion of singles play. Huskers who do not advance in main draw singles or doubles will play extra or consolation matches.
