Minneapolis, Minn. – The Nebraska women’s tennis team put away an impressive 19 wins on the first day of the Gopher Invitational hosted at the University of Minnesota’s Baseline Tennis Center.

Tennis action picked up in the morning with a full singles bracket competing both indoors and outdoors at Baseline. Seven of the 10 Huskers competing pocketed singles victories to finish the morning.

First to claim a win for the Big Red was Paula Del Cueto Castillo. The junior started the morning with a quick 6-1, 6-2 single victory over Milica Novakovic of Marquette. The Sevilla, Spain, native then earned her second of three wins on the day after swinging to an impressive 6-3, 6-1 triumph over Iowa State’s Maty Cancini.

Del Cueto Castillo collected her third win of the tournament with partner Vasanti Shinde. The junior duo downed Lo and Lorentz of Omaha in a nail-biting 7-6 (7-5) final score.

Shinde pocketed another win for the Big Red after taking down South Dakota State’s Katerina Tretyakova in a 6-2, 6-1 final decision. This brought the Nebraska total to four on the day.

Also contributing two singles wins for morning action was sophomore Claire Reifeis. Reifies stormed through competitive singles play to take home her first win of the weekend with 6-1, 6-1, sets against South Dakota’s Habiba Aly. After an equally impressive 6-3, 6-1 victory over Annabella Bondonna of Iowa State, Reifeis will advance further into main draw singles tomorrow.

Pairing up with Senior Brianna Lashway, Reifies also helped to contribute a doubles win for Nebraska. Lashway and Reifeis teamed up to pick up a quick 6-1 victory over Omaha’s Crowell and Wilson.

Singles matches continued against tough components through the morning as Lashway advanced the Husker’s team score with another singles victory. The recent Husker addition downed the Gophers’ own Tina Kreinis in matching 6-4, 6-4 sets.

Jeannie Lozowski became the third member of the Nebraska roster to take home a pair of singles wins for Friday, with a pair of wins against Marquette and South Dakota. Lozowski earned her first triumph of the morning by publishing a 6-1, 6-3 win over Issy Franks of Marquette. The sophomore followed it up with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Luana Stanciu of South Dakota.

The junior picked up her first win over Nanette Nylund of USD, fighting hard to a 6-0, 7-6 (7-2) final decision, before earning a 6-0, 6-2 win over SDSU’s Emily Van Dijk to advance tomorrow.

Securing two, Gould stormed into singles action with a pair of her own victories against North Dakota. The first came over Masha Lobanova, where the junior furnished a 6-3, 6-1 final score. The second singles victory sliding in at a hard-fought 7-5, 6-4 against Alex Revenig.
