Nebraska Brings Home Nine More Wins

Minneapolis, Minn. – The Nebraska women’s tennis team gained nine more wins during Saturday competition at the Gopher Invitational. Sophomores Claire Reifeis and Jeannie Lozowski will battle tomorrow for a chance at the singles championship match.

The Big Red notched four of its nine wins during singles play. Advancing further into the main singles draw, Reifies was first to punch out a victory over opponent Tayla Stenta of NC State. Reifies, an Indianapolis, Ind., native stormed to a well-fought 7-5, 6-4 victory.

Also advancing closer to a spot in the singles championship was Lozowski, earned a quick 6-2, 6-4 win against the Gopher’s AnneMarie Emme. Adding another victory to the Husker’s total, Lozowski then paired up with freshman Emily Rees to claim a 6-3 win South Dakota in doubles play. Rees later picked up a hard fought 6-0, 7-6 (7-5) singles victory of her own against Omaha’s Rylee Tucker in the back draw. 

M’Balia Bangoura captured the last singles victory for the day for Nebraska. The sophomore pulled a tough 3-6, 6-2, 11-9 triumph over South Dakota's Barbora Kollarova. 

Besides Lozowski and Rees' win, the Huskers claimed a handful of additional wins in doubles play. Duo Hayley Haakenstand and Reifeis secured a 6-3 win over Frank and Amortegui of Marquette before falling later in the day to a Drake duo. Elizabeth Gould and her partner Marina Cozac stormed to victories over South Dakota State and Marquette. The pair first pushed past Tretyakova and Van Dijk of SDSU, 6-2. Thenext  victory for Gould and Cozac came with a close 7-5 result over the Golden Eagle’s Novakovic and Foe. Bringing home the Big Red’s final doubles win Saturday was Brianna Lashway and partner Paula Del Cueto Castillo. The duo teamed up to shut out Omaha’s Lo and Crowell, 6-0.
