Huskers Climb at Chip-N Club
Lincoln - Annie Sritragul and Audrey Judd both fired even-par rounds of 72 to help the Nebraska women's golf team post Monday's top team round at the Chip-N Club Invitational at Wilderness Ridge Golf Course.
Sritragul, a sophomore from Bangkok, Thailand, climbed three spots on the individual leaderboard into sole possession of second place with a 36-hole score of 147 (75-72). Sritragul's three-over-par total put her one stroke ahead of Judd on the leaderboard. The senior from Olathe, Kan., heads into Tuesday's final round with a two-round total of 148 (76-72) to sit in a tie with Victoria Chandra from Kansas.
Sritragul and Judd will chase UC Irvine's Janet Yeo Tuesday. Yeo carded Monday's best individual round with a one-under-par 71 in challenging scoring conditions on the 6,251-yard layout at Wilderness Ridge. Occasionally gusty winds and changing weather conditions that included a brief deluge of mid-afternoon rain made playing conditions interesting throughout the day.
As a team, Nebraska overcame the conditions to put up Monday's best round with a 12-over-par 300. The round by the Huskers was five strokes better than Boise State's 305, and six shots better than the tournament leaders from Kansas (306). The Big Red were able to cut KU's lead in half, after closing Sunday's first round 12 strokes behind the Jayhawks (294). The Huskers opened with a 306.
Nebraska heads into Tuesday's final round with a two-round total of 606, trailing only Kansas (600). UC Irvine sits in third place at 611, following a 306 on Monday.
"I am obviously excited that we posted the best team round of the day. Maybe the most exciting part is we're still not playing all that well from top to bottom in our lineup," Nebraska Coach Robin Krapfl said. "Annie and Audrey were really solid and are playing some really good golf right now. If we can get Kate (Smith) and Haley and Hannah (Thiele) all clicking together, we have the change to be a great team moving forward. Hopefully we can see some of that tomorrow. We also got a solid round from Jessica Haraden and Noor Ahmed will continue to contend for lineup spots throughout the season."
Smith, a sophomore from Detroit Lakes, Minn., managed a 77 on Monday to move up three spots on the leaderboard into a tie for 10th at 154. Freshman Hannah Thiele produced Nebraska's No. 4 counting score of the day with a 79 that included a pair of eagles. She enters the final round in a tie for 16th (157) in her first career lineup appearance for the Huskers.
Haley Thiele settled for a second-round 82 to slip into a tie for 27th at 160. The sophomore from Wahoo, Neb., is tied with teammate Noor Ahmed (81-79-160) on the leaderboard. The freshman from Folsom, Calif., is playing as an individual outside the Husker lineup, along with fellow Californian Jessica Haraden. A sophomore from Thousand Oaks, Calif., Haraden carded Nebraska's third-best individual round of the day with a 715, to vault 17 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 32nd (86-75-161).
Senior Emily Gillman rounded out the NU contingent with an 81 to close the day in a tie for 47th at 165.
Tuesday's final round will begin with a shotgun start at 8:45 a.m. (CT). Admission is free. Live scoring will be available throughout the round from GolfStat.com.
