Labriola Wins Title at Bob Smith Open
Hays, Kan. - Mikey Labriola continued his strong open to his freshman season, as he defeated No. 12 Jacobe Smith of Oklahoma State to win the title at 174 pounds at the Bob Smith Open on Sunday at the Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays, Kan.
Three other Huskers earned top-four finishes at the tournament, as Zemua Baptista and Luke Weber finished second and third, respectively, at 157 pounds, while Johnny Blankenship placed fourth at 165.
Labriola's run through the 174-pound bracket began with a pin in 1:33 over Zach Gadbois of Bethany, Labriola's quickest pin of the season. He won a 23-8 technical fall over David Kelly of Barton Community College, before advancing to the final with a 17-6 major decision over Miguel Barreras of Central Oklahoma.
In the final, Labriola won a 7-6 decision over OSU's Smith, the third ranked wrestler that Labriola has taken down this season. Labriola is now 13-0 on the year, with four pins, three technical falls and three major decisions, with three open tournament titles under his belt.
At 157 pounds, Baptista went 4-1 on the day, dropping his only match to Oklahoma State starter Jonce Blaylock in the final, a 3-2 decision. Weber went 5-1 and defeated Central Oklahoma's Dayton Garrett by a 13-5 major decision in the third-place match.
Blankenship went 3-2 at 165 pounds, as he fell to Central Oklahoma's Mason Thompson in the third-place match.
Dylan Gowin (125), Christian Miller (141), Dalton Peters (165), Colton Wolfe (197) and Wyatt Wriedt (HWT) also competed for Nebraska at the Bob Smith Open, but did not place.
