Baptista, Gowin Claim Hastings Cusatis Open Titles

Hastings, Neb. - Nebraska wrestlers Dylan Gowin (125) and Zemua Baptista (157) both won titles at their respective weight classes at the Hastings Cusatis Open on Saturday afternoon at Hastings High School. 

Dalton Peters (165) and Patrick Grayson both took third at the tournament to round out the list of four NU placers.

Gowin, a freshman from Shawnee Kan., who was competing unattached, rolled through the 125-pound bracket with a major decision, a pin and a pair of decisions, including a 7-1 win over Collin Metzgar of Northeastern Junior College. The tournament title is the first for Gowin in his career, as he improves to 13-5 on the season.

Baptista, a redshirt freshman from Friend, Neb., claimed his second open tournament title of the season, as he went 4-0 at 157 pounds with a win over Skyler Lykins of Colorado School of Mines by a score of 16-13 in the final. Baptista won a technical fall and a fall, in addition to a pair of decisions. He runs his record to 20-4 on the year, as he also placed first at the Doane Open in December.

Peters went 5-1 and defeated Justin Anderson of Northeastern Junior College by a 15-0 technical fall in the third-place match. Grayson claimed third place following a medical forfeit from Lex Plummer of Kansas Weslayan.

Caleb Licking (157) and Colton Wolfe (197) also competed at the Cusatis Open, but did not place.
