By NU Athletic Communications

Lincoln, Neb. – Freshman gymnast Griffin Kehler claimed his first NCAA Rookie-of-the-Week award after his outstanding performance against Ohio State on Jan. 20. He becomes the first Husker to receive an NCAA award this season.

“I’m very proud and happy for Griffin,” Head Coach Chuck Chmelka said. “He is an extremely hard worker and a great young man who gives it his all every day. I’m so happy that it paid off for him this week.”

The only Husker freshman to compete on three or more events, Kehler led NU to a 411.750 – 404.150 win over the No. 3 Buckeyes with season-high scores on floor and parallel bars. The Frisco, Texas, native placed second overall on floor (14.25) and parallel bars (13.75), and fourth overall on high bar (13.10). Kehler’s impressive scores allowed Nebraska to claim the No. 1 spot for the second week in a row.

"Being named Rookie-of-the-Week is a great honor," Kehler said. "I'm glad I was able to achieve this accomplishment and represent Nebraska to the best of my ability."

Kehler and the No. 1 Huskers take one week off before traveling to Norman, Okla., to take on the defending national champion Sooners. Competition is set for 7 p.m.
