Six Huskers in Coaches' Panel, RPI Rankings
Six Nebraska wrestlers were represented in the second NCAA Division I Coaches' Panel Rankings, as well as the first RPI rankings, both released Thursday.
Taylor Venz is the highest ranked Husker in the coaches' panel rankings, as he is seventh at 184 pounds. Tyler Berger joined Venz in the top-10, as he is ranked eighth at 157. Colton McCrystal is ranked 11th at 149 pounds, while both Chad Red Jr. (141) and Isaiah White (165) are ranked 12th at their respective weight classes. Eric Schultz moves up one spot to 24th at 197 in the second set of rankings.
The same six Huskers were ranked in the initial set of coaches' rankings, released Jan. 18. Berger, McCrystal, Red and White each held the same spot in this week's release, while Venz dropped one spot and Schultz made a one-spot jump.
Four Huskers made the top-10 of the RPI rankings, as Berger is the highest ranked Husker at fifth. Both White and Venz are sixth, while McCrystal is rated ninth. Red comes in at 12th in the first RPI rankings, while Schultz is ranked 26th.
Wrestlers in each weight class will be measured by winning percentage, rating percentage index (RPI) and coaches’ rankings to earn spots in their qualifying tournaments for the 2018 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. The coaches’ rankings are compiled by a vote of coaches representing each qualifying tournament. For ranking purposes, coaches may only consider a wrestler that has been designated as a starter at a respective weight class. To be eligible for the rankings, wrestlers must have participated in at least five matches against Division I opponents in the weight class and have wrestled within the last 30 days.
The RPI rankings require a minimum of 17 matches against other Division I competition to earn a ranking. The RPI factors winning percentage, opponent winning percentage and opponents’ opponent winning percentage.
The next rankings release on February 22 is slated to correspond with the reveal of conference allocations for the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.
The 2018 NCAA Championships are set for March 15-17 at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio.
