Ninth Annual Student-Athlete Networking Night

By NU Athletic Communications

The ninth annual Student-Athlete Networking Night was held on Wednesday, February 21st. The event provided second-year student-athletes with the opportunity to interact with 18 distinguished professionals from a variety of career fields. The group of professionals included business leaders, academics, and several Nebraska letterwinners who have successfully executed the art of networking throughout their careers.

The event began with keynote speaker Kathy Farrell, Dean of the College of Business at the University of Nebraska. Farrell shared her personal experience with networking and the impact the impact it can have on a career path. She stressed that networking is not simply about making connections, but building meaningful relationships. Farrell urged students to be intentional with their communication, closing her portion of the event with a homework assignment that asked students to write a thank you note to individuals who have made a difference in their lives.

The student-athletes then had the opportunity to engage with the professionals in a small group setting. Hayley Haakenstad, a sophomore on the women’s tennis team, valued the opportunity to learn and interact. “This event was great because it helped me get out of my comfort zone and learn how to approach professional conversations,” Haakenstad reflected. “Every professional has something different to offer, and it was great getting to hear about each individual's journey and what they have been through.”

Ashley Stone, Director of PEO Programs, concluded the event with a presentation on the importance of dining etiquette and making a positive first impression. The student-athletes then had the opportunity to put their newly acquired knowledge to the test in a reception setting, interacting with professional guests and peers.
