Huskers Set Sights on National Title
The Nebraska rifle team will complete its season this weekend in Charleston, S.C. for the 2018 NCAA Championships. The Citadel will host the championships in McAlister Field House. Individual and team smallbore competition will occur on Friday, March 9. Air rifle will be held the following day. Shooting action is scheduled to begin at 9:15 CT both days. The Huskers will be joined by West Virginia, TCU, Murray State, Kentucky, Alaska, Air Force and Ohio State.
The Huskers broke a school record this season with its sixth consecutive selection to the NCAA Championships. The team will seek the first national title in school history. Doing so would mean earning Nebraska’s first top-three finish since 2006 when the team placed sixth. It would also mean knocking off West Virginia, the top-ranked team and defending champion. West Virginia has placed first at the NCAA Championships the last five years.
Nebraska last competed at the GARC Championships in Morgantown, W. Va. The Huskers took fifth out of nine with a final team aggregate score of 4,651 after losing the fourth-place tiebreaker with Ole Miss. West Virginia took first, followed by Kentucky and then Navy. NC State finished sixth, Army finished seventh and Akron took eighth. Memphis rounded out the rest of the field.
