Sixteen Wrestlers Named Academic All-Big Ten

By NU Athletic Communications

A total of 16 Nebraska wrestlers were named Academic All-Big Ten, the most the wrestling program has put on the list since joining the conference in the 2011-12 academic year, the Big Ten announced Wednesday.

The list of honorees is headlined by senior Mitchell Maginnis, a four-time Academic All-Big Ten selection. The Grand Island, Neb., native is majoring in nutrition science, and was NU's starter at 125 pounds this season. He ended his career at Nebraska with a 58-36 record.

Two-time All-American Tyler Berger was named Academic All-Big Ten for a third time in his career. The psychology major from Prineville, Ore., went 28-9 on the season and finished third at last weekend's NCAA Championships. Juniors Brian Peska and Aris Shino were also selected Academic All-Big Ten for the third time in their careers, while Justin Arthur Eric Engler, David Jensen and Jordan Shearer earned a spot on the Academic All-Big Ten list for a second time.

All-American Taylor Venz earned Academic All-Big Ten honors for a first time. He wrapped up a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Championships to cap a 29-9 redshirt freshman season. Fellow redshirt freshmen Johnny Blankenship, Beau Breske, Dalton Peters, Kyle Ruettiger, Eric Schultz and Cade Svoboda and junior Dustin Williams were also named Academic All-Big Ten for a first time.

To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, students must be on a varsity team, as verified by being on the official squad list as of March 1 for winter sports, who have been enrolled fulltime at the institution for a minimum of 12 months and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.

Nebraska wrestlers have earned a total of 75 Academic All-Big Ten awards since 2012.

The 16 honorees from Nebraska is tied with Penn State for most among Big Ten wrestling programs.

In all, 66 Husker student-athletes across six sports (men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s gymnastics, women’s swimming and diving and wrestling) earned selection to the Winter Academic All-Big Ten teams.
