Nebraska Overpowers Indiana, 6-1

By NU Athletic Communications

Lincoln, Neb. – The No. 36 Nebraska women’s tennis team boosted its Big Ten record to 3-3 after defeating the Indiana Hoosiers, 6-1, in Bloomington, Ind., on Sunday.

The team received its first spark in doubles play, when the Huskers battled hard for victories across all three courts.

Junior Vasanti Shinde and senior Katerina Matysova pulled in the swiftest doubles win on court 3 as they overtook Indiana’s Olga Zavarotnaya and Michelle McKamey, 6-2.

The intense duels on the other two courts created an atmosphere where no single point would be easy.

The next duo to overcome the Hoosiers included sophomores Hayley Haakenstad and Claire Reifeis, who led a 7-6 (8-6) defeat of Caitlin Bernard and Natalie Whalen and collected the doubles point for Nebraska.

The victory galvanized the pair of junior Paula Del Cueto Castillo and senior Brianna Lashway, who went on to lead a 7-6 (7-5) triumph over Hoosiers Madison Appel and Jelly Bozovic.

The two teams rolled into singles play next, where the energized spark remained lit for each Big Red competitor.

Producing the first Husker singles win was Matysova from the No. 5 spot as she steadily took down Bozovic, 6-3, 6-1.

Reifeis followed suit in the No. 2 spot, successfully thwarting a win for Bernard with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph.

Haakenstad took after her doubles partner in the No. 6 spot, bringing in Nebraska’s fourth point and clinching the win over Indiana with her 6-3, 6-4 defeat of McKamey.

The two teams continued play, allowing Shinde and Del Cueto Castillo to add two points to the Huskers’ final score. Shinde brought in her victory through a 6-4, 6-3 defeat of Whalen and Del Cueto Castillo notched her win in a 6-3, 6-4 takedown of Indiana’s Xiwei Cai.

The victory for the Huskers gives Nebraska a 3-2 lead in its all-time series records with Indiana and advances its record to 14-5 (3-3 B1G). The Big Red continues Big Ten competition on Friday, April 6, as it heads back on the road for an away match against Rutgers (5-9, 0-5 B1G), followed by another match at Maryland (7-9, 1-4 B1G) on Sunday.
