Berger, Venz Earn NWCA All-Academic Honors
Nebraska All-Americans Tyler Berger and Taylor Venz garnered NWCA All-Academic Team accolades, announced by the National Wrestling Coaches Association on Thursday.
Berger (157), a junior psychology major from Prineville, Ore., earned recognition for the second time. Berger received his second All-America honors this season after taking third place at the 2018 NCAA Championships in March. He finished the season with a 28-9 record.
Venz (184), a redshirt freshman from Farmington, Minn., who is also majoring in psychology, was selected to the NWCA All-Academic Team for a first time. Venz earned All-America honors in his first season in the Nebraska starting lineup, as he finished fourth at the NCAA Championships. Venz led the Huskers with 29 wins compared to just nine losses, and he also led the team with 19 bonus-point wins.
In addition, Nebraska was ranked among the top-30 teams in the NWCA Division I All-Academic team standings, as the Huskers ranked 29th with a team GPA of 3.13. The team GPA was determined using a system that includes 12 student-athletes from each program. A total of 10 of these came from the wrestlers that were entries in the NCAA tournament conference qualifier.
The pair of grapplers named to the NWCA All-Academic Team increases Nebraska’s total number of honorees to 62 since 1991.
